Bollywood is less film-based and more celebrity based, as is the accepted norm. The movies are made around stars, and the audience flock to theaters to see them. Plain and simple. What gets out of hand is when the gossip culture of the industry take things too far.
Priyanka Chopra criticized for her clothing during meet and greet with Indian Prime Minister.
Recently, Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra met with the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Both were in Berlin, Germany while Chopra was promoting her latest Hollywood release, 'Baywatch'.
It was cool seeing a (now) global superstar like Chopra having an impromptu meet with the leader of her country. It also was an indication of just how successful she is now, being able to be invited to have an audience with the Prime Minister randomly. Most people saw it for just that; a cool meeting of two personalities from different public mediums.
Others however, found a crazy and massive problem with how Chopra was dressed when meeting the esteemed Prime Minister of India.
PM Narendra Modi himself is no stranger to controversy. Modi has been accused of being discriminatory towards certain minorities India, has been embroiled in many scandals, and is a public figure of much love and hate within his country. This 'scandal' however, seems to be the most ridiculous, while more aimed at Chopra than him.
Trolls online went absolutely nuts about what Chopra was wearing during her visit with the PM. Check out the image below for the utterly offensive and shameful clothing she chose that day.

Needless to say, (but I still have to write it because this is being read) Priyanka Chopra's outfit is nowhere near offending anyone's sensibilities, whatsoever. She's in a very elegant and classy dress. But that's not even the point!
It's ridiculous that this is even a concern. Yes, Chopra has proven herself as an incredibly successful actress both in India, and now internationally with her show 'Quantico'. She has made India proud, and in a way almost represents the country on the international stage. But by no means is she a national symbol for others to determine what she can or cannot do, or how.
There definitely seems to be more to this than just Chopra and her legs. It's almost like this the ass-backwards reaction of some who fear that Modi will somehow lose his superpowers of national awesome-ness in the presence of a bad-ass woman. Especially when that woman is exercising her right to present herself in whatever manner she chooses, displaying her success and prominence with ease and comfort.
In 2017, are we still discussing how a woman needs to make herself seem lesser, or subdue themselves in the presence of a man? And I'm not the only one who finds this nonsense goofy. Varun Dhawan supported Chopra's meeting with Modi and diffused the trolling right away.
“She is someone we all should be proud of in our country. She is making our country proud abroad and all this is very stupid. Social media trolling is not something that needs to become a national issue”.
-- Varun Dhawan
Not only is this reaction by a few online completely astounding, it's hypocritical as hell. No one seems to be clamoring for a boycott of movies where Chopra flaunts her sexiness on screen. Audiences seem to lap that up by the butt-load. But everyone feels the need to get conservative and uptight when she happens to be with the PM?
Bollywood is an an industry where Chopra's films in which she has donned a swimsuit, performed better at the box office, than the ones where she actually performs a serious role in experimental cinema. (More often than not) Yet people of the same industry who consume those depictions of her, want to climb on their high horse to preach shame and impart wisdom on respectful sense of style and fashion? Come on!
It's these double standards that prevent Bollywood and, to a larger extent, the country itself, from achieving any type of large scale, collective global success. This minority who seem to have selective logic, speak out due to agendas and whose outrage are laser focused on ideas that they have already condemned, are the few who prevent progressive mentalities from prevailing.
Indian woman already have to deal with screwed up sensibilities of beauty, skin tone, far from having equal rights, being outright ignored when it comes to being victimized... and obvious double standards when it comes to sexuality. And it is now clear that not even a successful and global icon such as Priyanka Chopra is exempt from those perceptions.
The always diplomatic Priyanka Chopra however is not one to shy away from controversy. The actress always deals with the tabloid journalism in tongue-in-cheek manners, giving flippant but resolute response that shut down her nay-sayers.
Similarly during this controversy, Chopra ended up getting the last word, with the Instagram post, and caption pictured below.
Priyanka Chopra should be the gold standard on how to deal with unfair criticism in a world where, I guess he most eloquently way to put it is, 'haters gonn' hate!'
