Shah Rukh Khan is undeniably the biggest actor of the Indian Film Industry. Aptly nicknamed 'King Khan', the actor has made the most iconic films, with the most memorable roles and commands a fan following of massive proportions. With many international honors and both critical and commercial success in the industry, it's no wonder that even most non-Bollywood audiences know his name.
Now, while Shah Rukh Khan is considered unanimously as the face of Bollywood, he has his detractors as well. Most of their criticism boils down to one major and justifiable complaint; his refusal to do roles that provide variety and allow him to use his full range of acting talent that we all know him to possess.
However, playing the same role in every movie is a criticism that, to be fair, most successful Bollywood actors/actresses get labelled with at one time or another; especially when the films do well. While a dip in Box Office earnings urges most actors to rebrand themselves with more different roles (See: Sonakshi Sinha) few are content in their shtick as Shah Rukh Khan. The reason is because his shtick works. Almost everytime!
After receiving critical praise for his mature and subdued performance, playing supporting role to Alia Bhatt in Gauri Shinde's 'Dear Zindagi', Khan will be seen next as a smuggler in Rahul Dholakia's 'Raees'. Both counterintuitive roles than what he's done recently. And after the mediocre to lukewarm reception of his most recent blockbuster films like 'Dilwale' & 'Happy New Year', Khan definitely seems to be branching out with newer choice of roles.
With that in mind, I take a look at some Shah Rukh Khan roles where he's portrayed something different than the romantic hero image that he's received the most success with. Films where 'King Khan' has given the audiences something different than what we're used to seeing; challenged himself through performance, played a character that was depicted outside the norm for the genre, or chose a film which had a unique story that was outside his own comfort zone and safety net of pandering to the crowds.
So if you're new to Bollywood films, or a life-long fan, take a look at what I think is a beginner's guide to the best movies of Bollywood's biggest actor that showcases different the shades of an already talented actor.
