The Actress
Starting out as a child artist, Sridevi actually ended up winning Best Child Artist award at the Kerala State Film Awards for her performance in the Malayalam film Poompatta (1971) at the age of 8. The next year saw her debut into Bollywood, also as a child artist, in the 1972 Rani Mera Naam. During her tenure in Kollywood, Sridevi won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress - Tamil in 1981, and another one in Telugu in 1992 for Kshana Kshanam in Tollywood.
It may be difficult to imagine in the current industry where star kids with no training or experience are repeatedly given opportunities in leading roles within Indian films, that Sridevi was winning Best acting awards at age 8. Just let that sink in.
It was also during this time that Sridevi was part of a hit duo with actor Kamal Hassan, another actor who’s jumped through successes in multiple Indian industries. Sridevi and Hassan appeared in 27 films, of various languages and of varying degrees of success.
Have witnessed Sridevi's life from an adolescent teenager to the magnificeint lady she became. Her stardom was well deserved. Many happy moments with her flash through my mind including the last time I met her. Sadma's lullaby haunts me now. We'll miss her

It was more than 10 years after her initial debut in Bollywood that Sridevi truly became recognizable. Her debut as a lead actress was with Solva Sawan in 1970, but the first movie to bring widespread notice was 1983’s Himmatwala, which features one of Sridevi’s most iconic song numbers. Sridevi’s pairing with Jeetendra was such a hit in Himmatwala, that it was repeated 15 other times to mostly successful results.
Her biggest Bollywood hits and the movies that would immortalize her work, would come in the forms of Lamhe, Mr. India, Chandni, Sadma, Chaalbaaz and Nagina. There are many others, but these are the films that stand out for me personally. These diverse roles that went from a dual mother-daughter role, a fantasy serpent creature, opposite twins and a silly journalist, truly captures the incredible range that Sridevi commanded during her entire career. It’s hard to look at any of those movies and not be surprised at the actress’s complete transformation from one character into the next.
