'SALAAM BOMBAY!' (1988)
A hard to swallow story about the street urchins within the Indian city of Mumbai (then known as Bombay), 'Salaam Bombay!' is a remarkable piece of cinema, directed by international director Mira Nair.
The story follows the life of one young boy and his struggle to return to the life he knows, by having to live on the streets and do whatever he can to survive. His life turns upside down as he becomes involved with people exploiting street children, falls in love, experiences tragedy and loss, and matures dramatically quick as a result of it all.
Why you should watch it: 'Salaam Bombay!' is the 2nd Indian Film Industry movie to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film category. It's by the same director of acclaimed Hollywood films like 'The Namesake' (2006) & 'Queen Of Katwe'. (2016) Not to mention that all the kids in the film were actual street kids, who were given a workshop of acting training prior to production; which is pretty remarkable.
