Irrfan Khan is a Bollywood powerhouse known for doing no wrong. The actor has proven a model of success within the industry, that doesn't require one to have connections or check the conventional boxes of what it means to be a hero. His latest film however, definitely seems like a miss rather than hit.
'Qarib Qarib Singlle' looks like a romantic comedy with a very poorly cut trailer. Hopefully.
The trailer for 'Qarib Qarib Singlle' is all over the place. The film looks like it's a road trip movie with two unlikely single people, who end up falling in love? Or two single people stuck together due to circumstance? Or potential arranged marriage candidates vetting each other?
It's really hard to tell, as the trailer just features a charismatic character played by Irrfan Khan, making jokes and cracking wise with the lead actress Parvathy. The context of who and why they are together, is lost in this very bad trailer.
From what I can gather, the movie is about our two characters who are single, and looking for love and / or marriage. The two are hugely mismatched; while Khan plays an obnoxious and boisterous personality, Parvathy plays a more restrained and sensible woman. For whatever reason, they embark on a road trip, which leads to crazy hijinks and general bonding.
Unlike the typical Shahrukh Khan romance, the film's road trip stays localized to within India, which is definitely a refreshing change of pace.
The trailer has good moments, smile worthy and hilarious scenes that definitely lead to thinking that this is a comedy. With the obligatory sizzle reel of serious drama near the end which reveals nothing of the plot either. The songs sound pretty cool too, and it's low budget vibes remind me of Khan's other movie this year, 'Hindi Medium'.
'Qarib Qarib Singlle' is written & Directed by Tanuja Chandra, a pretty accomplished filmmaker in her own right, with hits like 'Dil To Pagal Hai' to her name as a writer, and 'Sangharsh' as a director.
While the movie itself may be a charming story with finer performances, especially given the star cast, this trailer does very little to make one want to watch it. 'Qarib Qarib Singlle' could be an Irrfan Khan movie that feels more like a pass than anything else he's done recently. Hopefully the film itself proves me wrong.
