Remaking a successful regional language film into the more mainstream Hindi Movie Industry (a.k.a. Bollywood) has become all the rage in India right now. I recently discussed why the amazing 'Sairat' should not be remade into Hindi. Yet in 2017, we've got a new Hindi remake coming based on a Tamil film titled 'OK Jaanu'.
Check out the Trailer for 'OK Jaanu' and tell me if you think it's as bad as I do.
Centering around the characters played by Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, 'OK Jaanu' is all about a couple who meet and unexpectedly decide to have a live-in relationship, with no intentions or plans of getting married or even being with each long term. This is because both have career ambitions that lead them out of the country, and obviously away from one another. the story deals with how this affects them when they both (inevitably) fall in love with one another.
Now I personally haven't seen 'O Kadhal Kanmani', the original film that 'OK Jaanu' is remade from, so I cannot comment on the quality of that film. However, the trailer of 'OK Jaanu' looks absolutely atrocious. I can't even begin to describe the plethora of ways in which this defies levels of terrible-ness.
Let's skip any issues I may have with the story depicted in the Trailer, as I believe it's almost the exact same story from the original. So let's move on to my biggest problem with this trailer: the lead actors.
Aditya Roy Kapur is not charming or lead hero material. While the young actor has impressed me in many supporting roles from 'Guzaarish' to 'London Dreams', where his raw inexperience suited the characters he was playing. Kapur definitely has the potential tobe a leading man some day, as proven by his silent performance in 'Fitoor'. But in an urban setting, playing a casual cool every-day joe is something that Kapur does very forced and with purpose. This is a problem when we're supposed to find him appealing, but it feels like he's a sociopath pretending to be normal with his overuse of colloquoilisms and his constant yell-talking as if he's having to project his voice for the back row in a play.
Shraddha Kapoor is no better. While the actress has had many successful films under her belt, this trailer kind of exposes her wooden talents and a style which is basically being over enthused at everything. The moments in this trailer that are meant to be sexy come off awkward and clumsy. The two actors feel like they have been forced to work with one another. There is no chemistry to speak of between the two, and the lighter hearted moments come off extremely rehearsed and staged.
'OK Jaanu' may end up being as good as the original, or a suitable Hindi version of it, however, the Trailer sets it up as quite possibly the worst film of 2017. The trailer sees bulky dialogue uttered by charm-less actors who have the appeal of room temperature milk on a hot day.
'OK Jaanu' releases January 13th, 2017. Starring Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah. Directed by Shaad Ali.
Let me know what you thought about the 'OK Jaanu' trailer.
