Naseer Uddin Shah in 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' (2011)
No other father probably scarred their kid more so than Naseeruddin Shah's character in 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'. While fathers that were explicitly terrible to their kids hold a special place in evil-fatherdom, absentee ones seem to have more impact, surprisingly.
Farhan Akthar's character in the movie is introduced and set up almost as the comic relief. He is light hearted, goofy and whimsical. While also having a passionate side to him, as he composes poetry on the fly and is able to articulately express the more beautiful moments of life. So his connection to his father ends up being that much more devastating when it's finally revealed.
Akhtar's character grew up believing that his mother's husband was his biological father. But after his death, his mother confessed how his biological father abandoned them once she became pregnant. During a bachelor trip with his buddies, Akthar sought out his biological father to hear his side of things.
Shah played his father, and when confronted as to why he never chose to be a part of Akthar's life, Shah's explanation earns him a spot on this list. Very coldly and bluntly, Shah explains to Akthar, (keep in mind his own grown ass son that he's never met) that he didn't want a family, and wanted to pursue his career instead. And he gave this explanation completely straight faced and without ay visible signs of remorse or regret. Asshole!
It's a heartbreaking scene as Akthar's character faces the realization that the man he was admiring from afar, an artist like him, never wanted, nor does he seem to want now, anything to do with his own son. It's a gut wrenching moment in the film, and one that is further punctuated by Akthar's brilliant performance.
