The recent 'Dear Zindagi' teaser offered a different take on the usual marketing campaign for a Bollywood movie. Forgoing a brief-teaser-then-full-trailer formula, the film will release short takes as snippets into the film, as teaser trailers. How many of these we're going to get and just how detailed they will be is still a mystery. But it's definitely a unique strategy.
So here's Take 2 of the 'Dear Zindagi' teaser and it's the best one yet.
My only complaint with the First Take for 'Dear Zindagi' was that it wasn't a good teaser. It featured only two dialogues by each character, followed by two location shots and a chemistry between the lead actors that felt forced. But to be fair, there wasn't enough interaction between the two for us to even gauge our own interest level for the story, based on the characters themselves, and not the stars. Obviously.
Take 2, however, is a lot more enjoyable. The new teaser follows a running joke, something that is actually more of an Alia Bhatt joke within the Bollywood industry about the ditzy vibes that she's become infamous for. But all in all, the teaser is pretty sweet and charming. It also provides us a look into the characters themselves through some conventional short cut montages.
The reports of Shahrukh Khan's character, whose name is Jag by the way, playing a psychiatrist seem to be true, as we get their first introduction in what presumably looks like his office. It also feels like she's not too happy to be there, as she comes off kinda of grumpy. Implying maybe she's seeing a therapist more out of compulsion than her own choice?
The teaser also provides more insight into Bhatt's character. Kaira's is a filmmaker who is bubbly, bright, enthusiastic and downright silly. Nothing too far off left field from that Bhatt has played many times before. There is also a rapid fire montage of home life and just general fun filled times, showcasing the more light hearted and coming of age style of the story.
The movie's tone comes through a lot better in Take 2 as well. Take 1 was abruptly short, and didn't really convey a sense of what the movie was about. Whereas Take 2 appropriately gives us a blend of beautifully framed shots, but also enough of the quiet realism in the images that we've become used to from director Gauri Shinde as was also apparent in 'English Vinglish'. (my Review)
I'm always concerned about Khan being his usual over the top self, dominating the screen with his presence. So it's nice to see his character be a bit more subdued, while still being light hearted and witty. So far all the footage of him in 'Dear Zindagi' seems very low key and not at all taking over the screen, as we're used to. It definitely seems like, even though the film features these two stars, the story is about Bhatt's Kaira, and the filmmakers are staying true to that.
The more I see of 'Dear Zindagi', the more I am continuing to be impressed. Ever so gradually.
'Dear Zindagi' releases November 26th, 2016.
