'Fire' (1996)
Writer and director Deepak Mehta's first film of her Elements Trilogy, began with an explosive film dealing the role of women in relationships, as well as depicting a lesbian relationship as well, in 'Fire'.
Surprisingly, the film went uncut and was given a rating of Adult by the CBFC. 'Fire' was released without issues, but post-release ignited a lot of controversy, protest, boycotts and general upheaval in the public eye. Lawsuits and petitions flew all over the place. The film was accused of destroying Hindu ideologies and homosexuality was compared to an epidemic on the minds of the youth of the country.
'Fire' is unique as that controversy occurred in an age pre-Social Media, so the subject matter and controversy didn't actually happen during the making of the film, but rather after it's full release. It's also a rare instance when some of the Bollywood fraternity showed solidarity and stood beside director Deepak Mehta, in a joint petition to the Supreme Court, advocating the right to free speech and artistic creativity.
'Fire' went onto be a pivotal movie in the exposure and depiction of such controversial subject matter in Indian films.
'Fire' stars Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das, directed by Deepak Mehta.
