'Unfreedom' (2014)
'Unfreedom' is the story about a Muslim fundamentalist kidnapping a liberal Muslim scholar, and that of a closeted Lesbian woman, and posits a discussion on the merits of freedom and repression under the guise of liberalism.
The film drew the wrath of the CBFC and other organizations in India. When offered to make edits of the questionable content to the film, director Raj Amit Kumar attempted to appeal to other branches of the government. However, this caused the film to be banned outright, with no recourse available to the filmmakers.
Kumar has since maintained his plea for free speech and been involved in many movements to try to get the film released. Since this writing, 'Unfreedom' is still banned in India, barring 1 private screening that Kumar held for students. The film was released and screened in America, however, without any issues.
'Unfreedom' stars Adil Hussein, Victor Banerjee, Bhanu Uday, Preeti Gupta and is directed by Raj Amit Kumar.
