Note: This list features movies that are about boxing; as in, the storyline involves the sport, or the premise revolves around the sport itself. Movies about wrestling, ('Dangal') Mixed Martial Arts ('Brothers', 'Sultan') or where a character boxes, but which has nothing to do with the story, ('Bombay Velvet') have been excluded.
'Saala Khadoos' (2016)
When a failed boxer who now coaches women's boxing, is further exiled for taking on the dirty politics of the sport, he finds redemption in an unlikely source. Recognizing the raw talent in an untrained girl, the coach decides to train her, despite being a bitter and cruel man due to his own failures. The aggressive nature of his new student butts heads against his own, as they two have to figure out how to deal with one another, while pursuing their own dreams... together.
'Saala Khadoos' is a movie that builds on the more mainstream appeal of 'Dangal', with a young girl in a physically competitive and aggressive sport. Madhavan, usually known prior to this as a soft spoken actor in roles like 'Tanu Weds Manu', surprised everyone by playing a character unlike anything that he's ever played before. The young girl, played by Ritika Singh, is also able to make heads turn with her dedication to the physicality of the role.
'Saala Khadoos' was appreciated for its progressive content and for its audacity to go against the conventional stories and dealing with subject matter that the Indian Industry rarely deals with.
