While most movies tout themselves as being 'different' and 'unique', despite rehashing the same premise and plot points repeatedly, some actually hold true to that claim. The upcoming film 'The Ghazi Attack' actually sets out to quite possibly be a film of an unprecedented genre from the Indian Film Industry. The movie features a story that is essentially a war drama from the perspective of the Indian Navy; a submarine drama.
The Trailer for 'The Ghazi Attack' is absolutely astounding.
Set during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, 'The Ghazi Attack' chronicles the story of a submarine caught in a rebellious war between Pakistan and East Pakistan, (later named Bangladesh) during a reconnaissance mission. The narration in the beginning of the trailer (possibly sounding like Amitabh Bachchan's deep baritone) hails the story of a unknown war that was fought under the oceans.
This kind of movie is unprecedented in the history of Indian cinema. There hasn't been a movie of this caliber or scope ever. While many Indian films have dealt with the Military during war, with soldiers on the battlefield and in the trenches, not many movies have dealt with the Indian Navy and the war being fought in the seas. 'The Ghazi Attack' is unique in the sense that it features scenes and locations set in never before seen settings for an Indian movie; inside a submarine.
But even without the novelty of the premise, the film itself looks like it's got an interesting story and seems to be hitting all the standard plot points of a movie about a crew of soldiers faced with a situation they were unprepared for, but having to come together on their own to overcome it. The story feels tense, and the action looks to compliment it further. Even the special effects look decent enough, especially given that it's mostly underwater effects, so any lacking of technology can be compensated for the fact that it's dark and murky in the water.
Rana Dagubatti ('Bahubali') stars as the young Naval officer to Kay Kay Menon's ('A Flying Jatt') more experienced and snarky veteran. Tapsee Pannu stars seemingly as a Bangladeshi refugee who is brought aboard the submarine during their mission. With a host of other supporting actors and recognizable faces, including the late great Om Puri, 'The Ghazi Attack' most definitely has a solid cast of performers backing the film.
A movie like this will automatically draw comparisons to Hollywood submarine films like 'The Hunt For Red October' or 'Crimson Tide', which is natural but unfair. While the subject of these movies can be considered a sub genre of war films in Hollywood, it's never been attempted in the Indian Industry.
While we often go out of our way to try to distinguish a variety of love stories from one another every year, it's wholly unique to see a film of this category attempting to make its mark. As it stands, 'The Ghazi Attack' looks to be the most different and unique movie of 2017.
'The Ghazi Attack' stars Rana Dagubatti, Kay Kay Menon, Tapsee Pannu, Om Puri & Atul Kulkarni. Directed by Sankalp Reddy.
The film releases February 17th, 2017.
