'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety' (February 23, India)
Luv Ranjan, writer & director of small budget rom-coms like 'Pyar Ka Punchnama' (1 & 2) has been pretty successful with his brand of films thus far. These smaller films, featuring newcomers in the lead roles, have fared well at the box office, and provided an alternative to the big blockbusters films that are hit and miss at times.
Ranjan's latest romantic comedy is 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety', which looks like a pretty decent movie, with a unique premise. At least for Bollywood. A love story where the guy's best friend goes to war with the guy's girlfriend, is extremely interesting, and the trailer gives a fun and never before seen approach to it.
Usually, romantic comedies with 2 guys and 1 girl always become a love triangle, but 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety' genuinely seems like a clash between two characters that care about the same man, for different reasons. A bromance vs. romance, is how the film is marketed, and it definitely feels different.
Bollywood rarely centers the premise of a movie around the platonic relationship between two men, (with some exceptions) but rather a romantic one with a traditional heterosexual couple. So a movie that gives each relationship significance in a war against one another... should definitely be worth a watch.
Something else to be excited about: the friend in this movie, played by Kartik Aaryan, had 5 & 6 minute, single take monologues in both of Luv Ranjan's previous films, where he went off about women and relationships. The sequences are the longest single take monologue done by any actor in Hindi film history. So, it remains to be seen if he will repeat a similar sequences in this movie.
